The Jewish Residents Council of Ann's Choice hosted Jewish educator Dr. Steven Chervin, center, Feb. 23, to discuss “Sects and the City – The Dead Sea Scrolls.” With him are Phyllis Halpern, JRC president, and Joe Shrager. The focus of Chervin’s illustrated lecture was what the Dead Sea Scrolls are, what’s in them and who wrote them. Chervin said the scrolls were discovered in 1947 by a Bedouin boy in the caves in Qumran by the Dead Sea. They may have been written by the Essenes some 2,000 years ago. The Dead Sea Scrolls provided validation of the current Torah, Chervin said.
