Glen Foerd accepting applications for its 2023-24 artist-in-residence program

Posted

Glen Foerd, Philadelphia’s public park and nonprofit cultural site along the Delaware River, just outside Bucks County, is accepting applications for its 2023-2024 Artist-in-Residence program until 11:59 p.m. Monday, Oct. 23.

This year, Glen Foerd will be accepting one regional visual artist (or artist collective) to complete a site-specific work during the residency. The selected artist will receive a stipend of $3,000 to create the works.

The 2023-24 Artist in Residence selection committee members are:

Billy Dufala, co-founder and creative director of RAIR - Recycled Artist in Residency and a Philadelphia-based artist/musician.

Kathleen Green, a trained visual artist and chief audience officer at Grounds For Sculpture in Hamilton, N.J.

Victoria Prizzia, founder of Habithèque Inc., an interpretive planning and design studio based in Pipersville, and creator of “POOL: A Social History of Segregation” and other major exhibits in Philadelphia.

Once selected, the Artist-in-Residence will have from Feb. 1, 2024, until Sept. 30, 2024, to complete their residency. The selected artist will create works that engage Glen Foerd’s audience and collections, which includes architecture, material culture, art, and natural landscapes. This opportunity offers area artists unprecedented access to Glen Foerd’s historic collections, grounds, and the Delaware River and allows each artist to engage in solely aesthetic interpretations or challenge dominant historical narratives by focusing on issues such as environmental conservation, wealth inequality, race, and industrialization.

Outcomes are open-ended and must include a public engagement component. Examples of public engagement include the following: exhibitions, gallery talks, and hands-on workshops that provide an entry point for new audience members to visit Glen Foerd. Artists will have access to and are encouraged to engage with Glen Foerd’s community partners, a process that will be facilitated by Glen Foerd’s staff.

Due to the site-specific nature of this residency, some artworks are on view year-round, and may be included in special exhibits after the residency term has ended. Works by past artists in residence have been collected by museums and included in regional and international exhibitions.

Intricate woven tapestries created by past resident Tabitha Arnold are currently on view at the Workers Arts and Heritage Centre in Ontario, Canada. Stunning full-room installations by Talia Green and Cindy Stockton Moore continue to offer creative interpretations of Glen Foerd’s history to visitors on a daily basis.
