Five Bucks County hospitals launch permanent sharps collection boxes

Posted

Permanent sharps disposal boxes are being made available at Doylestown Hospital, Grand View Hospital, Jefferson Bucks Hospital, St. Luke’s Hospital-Quakertown and St. Mary Medical Center.

Similar to the medication disposal boxes at these locations, the sharps boxes offer the community a safe and convenient way to dispose of used, unneeded and expired sharps (needles, syringes, lancets/finger sticks and auto injectors like Epi pens) to protect the community and the environment.

Until recently, residents had to dispose of these items on their own, through a pharmacy or online service. Now, community members dependent on sharps to stay healthy and improve quality of life can drop off their sharps at their local hospital.

The program is made possible through the Bucks County Medication Disposal Program, supported by the Bucks County Drug & Alcohol Commission, Bucks County Commissioners and the Bucks County District Attorney, and the Bucks County Healthcare Improvement Partnership (BCHIP), which aims to develop programs and policies that improve the health outcomes and well-being of the community.

A press conference to announce the plan is scheduled for Sept. 9, in Doylestown.
