Celebrate the Arts features African American spirituals

Posted

Doylestown Presbyterian Church’s Celebrate the Arts Series presents baritone Clayton Mathews, at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16 in the sanctuary building.

The community is invited to attend the uplifting musical event that promises to be educational and engaging in a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere. The well-known opera singer will perform a selection of African American Spirituals while sharing insight into the history behind the hymns.

“Individually we can express our frustrations, our sorrows, even our praise through our social climate in these spirituals,” Clayton said. “That’s the beauty of it. These spirituals aren’t going anywhere. The longer we live, the more relevant they are.”

The event is part of Doylestown Presbyterian Church’s journey as a Matthew 25 Congregation, during which it strives to become educated, build relationships, and take action against structural racism and its intersectionality with poverty.

No tickets are required. A free-will offering will be received. A reception of light refreshments will be offered in the Celtic Cross Room with Matthews. Doylestown Presbyterian Church is located at 127 E. Court St., Doylestown.

Matthews also will join DPC’s Youth Choir during the worship service at 10:30 am. All are welcomed to attend.
