Bucks County Symphony Orchestra opens its 70th Anniversary Season

Posted

The Bucks County Symphony Orchestra celebrates its 70th Anniversary Season with a fall concert at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, at Central Bucks High School East in Buckingham.

The BCSO is proud to introduce its new music director, Maestro José Luis Domínguez.

The concert is sponsored by the Warren Family Foundation in memory of Tamara Warren, a much-admired BCSO cellist and friend of the symphony.

The program features internationally recognized harpist Claire Thai, who joins the BCSO in a performance of the “Harp Concerto” written by Argentinean composer Alberto Ginastera.

Commissioned in 1956 and premiered by Spanish harpist Nicanor Zabaleta with The Philadelphia Orchestra in 1965, this intricate concerto ranges from the percussive and dance-like first movement, through an evocative and atmospheric second movement, to a wild and romping finale, a perfect showcase for Thai’s virtuosity.

A master student at Curtis Institute of Music, she has earned numerous awards from prestigious harp associations and international competitions. She currently studies Elizabeth Hainen, principal harpist of The Philadelphia Orchestra.

The BCSO opens its festive season with Jean Sibelius’ powerful and majestic “Finlandia.” Considered Finland’s greatest composer and a national hero, Sibelius celebrates through music his beloved homeland’s natural beauty and his country’s profound pride and patriotism. This beloved symphonic poem was composed in 1899 as part of the last of seven tableaux depicting episodes from Finnish history.

The BCSO concludes its fall performance with Antonín Dvořák’s “Symphony No. 8 in G.” Composed in 1889 on the occasion of the composer’s election to the Bohemian Academy of Science, Literature and the Arts, the music evokes the pastoral spirit of Bohemia, heavily influenced by both the country’s folk music and the serene sounds of nature which inspired so much of Dvořák’s musical output.

Tickets, $25 for adults and $20 for seniors, can be purchased in Doylestown at Rutherford’s Camera Shop and the Doylestown Bookshop, or online at BucksCountySymphony.org. Students are admitted free. Call 215-348-7321 or visit the website for more information.
