Bucks County feral cat advocate’s work makes New Jersey inroads

Posted

Chalfont native Donna Gellert’s fight on behalf of feral cats has expanded into New Jersey due to recent media coverage.

Last month, Gellert teamed up with officials at YMCA Camp Mason YMCA in Warren County to trap-neuter-return its feral cat community.

The partnership came after Donna Line, longtime camper, counselor and trustee, viewed coverage of Gellert’s work in the Bucks County Herald.

They had a successful first outing, using six traps to attempt to catch a community of more than 30 cats. By the end of the night, all of the traps had been used up, and the cats were sent to be fixed and vaccinated so that they could return to their territories without reproducing.

They even caught two kittens, that will be able to be socialized and adopted out at their young age by the Bucks County SPCA.

“We need kinder, more humane laws for community cats,” said Gellert, who sees the YMCA partnership is a big step.

Gellert and Line are receiving a lot of support from the Camp Mason administration.

“We can only do a little at a time, but we will do it all somehow,” Line said.

They hope to work with their team to continue to manage the colony at Camp Mason in the next few weeks.

Gellert reiterated that feeding feral cats without intention to neuter and vaccinate does more harm than good.

“If you manage the colonies, they will naturally get smaller and die off,” she said.
