Warwick resident’s memoir No. 1 on Amazon Books

Col. Rick Kiernan, U.S. Army (Retired), of Warwick has penned “The Best is Yet to Come, The Memoir of a Peaceful Warrior,” which has reached No. 1 on Amazon Books.

Kiernan’s memoir details years of service beside what he fondly calls a “band of brothers,” where going to work was like being with family.

He is a former infantry officer, paratrooper and public affairs officer who served in Vietnam and the first Gulf War. Further assignments included Germany, Alaska, Hawaii and the Pentagon, where he served as chief spokesman during Operation Just Cause and Operation Desert Storm. In 1991, he led the last U.S. delegation to the Former Soviet Union to assist The Kremlin with its media relations program.

As a public affairs officer he has been the editor of the infantry magazine, host of a public television show and managing editor of three weekly newspapers. Upon his Army retirement, Kiernan spent the next 15 years assisting emerging democracies with their initiatives toward freedom as the senior vice president with MPRI, a private military company.

“As I reflected on the last 75 years, I realized that 41 of those years were spent in the Army as a ‘Warrior’ who tried to bring peace to the world,” Kiernan writes in a letter to readers.

The book is divided into three sections: “Planting the Seeds” where he explores his early education including the Virginia Military Institute; “The Growth Years” he spent in the Army from 1967 to 1992, and finally “The Harvest Years” where he harvested the lessons learned and transitioned into civilian life, including work as a director of press operations for the Atlanta Olympics in 1996.
