The late Warrington Township Police Officer Stephen C. Plum Jr. was recently honored when a portion of Route 611 was named after him.
The state highway between Upper Barness and Oakfield roads is now the Officer Stephen C. Plum Jr. Memorial Highway, following a ceremony attended by local and state officials and Plum’s family.
Plum’s widow, Nancy, and their five children, ranging in age from 18 months to 14 years, were presented with a commemorative copy of the sign.
“It means a great deal to me and my whole family to see Stephen’s name on the highway sign. It keeps Stephen’s memory alive in the community and it serves as a powerful reminder that we have such exceptional people supporting us through our time of grief,” said Nancy Plum, in an email.
“It makes me happy when I see the look of pride on my children’s faces when we pass the sign.”
Plum died suddenly last May when he suffered a heart attack at his Warwick Township home. He was 38.
A U.S. Marine Corps veteran, he was with the Warrington Township Police Department for eight years, where he served with the department’s first K-9 Unit, with partner K-9 Murphy. Earning numerous certifications, Plum also served with the Major Incident Response Team, the Highway (Motorcycle) team and the Narcotics Unit.
Plum was beloved by his fellow officers and the larger community. His death shocked and deeply saddened the police department and all those who knew him.
“While we have done much to celebrate our former colleague Stephen C. Plum Jr. since we lost him last May, this sign brings us very close to him — and will be a forever reminder of all that he brought to Warrington Township as colleagues, visitors, and residents will see it (the sign) every day,” said Fred Gaines, chairman of the township’s board of supervisors, during the event.
Nancy Plum said she’s grateful for the efforts of former Rep. Todd Polinchock and current Rep. Brian Munroe “for this honor in my husband’s name.”
