Volleyball playoffs: Vikings, Golden Hawks hope for deep runs

Council Rock North was the No. 1 seed and district finalist in 2021. Is it sister school’s turn?

Council Rock South (16-2) ran the table in SOL play, going 12-0 en route to capturing the National Division. The Golden Hawks closed the regular season winning their last six matches in a row, and have a signature 3-2 win over No. 3 Haverford on Sept. 14 behind three aces and 11 kills from Edan Kauer. The Golden Hawks await No. 15 Methacton in Thursday’s District One 4A second round.

No. 9 CB West (15-3), the SOL Continental co-champion, swept No. 24 Bensalem 3-0 (25-19, 25-9, 25-15) in Tuesday’s first round 4A match. Rachel Hu and Alexis Barklage combined for 32 kills. West heads to No. 8 WC East in Thursday’s second round.

No. 14 Pennridge (16-5) the Continental’s other co-champion, topped No. 19 Council Rock North (14-7) 3-2 in a fiercely fought match.

The Indians, the SOL National’s third-place team, closed the regular season with three straight wins. Pennridge, who started 5-3, has now won 11 of 13. The Rams earned a date with Haverford on Thursday.

Archbishop Wood (10-1 PCL) won the regular season Philadelphia Catholic League title. They have made the PIAA 3A tournament in each of the last two seasons.

The No. 1 Lady Vikings defeated No. 8 Little Flower, whom they beat 3-0 to close the regular season, 3-0 in Monday’s PCL quarterfinal. It set up a late Wednesday match with No. 4 Lansdale Catholic, who handed Wood its lone conference loss.

The PCL finals are on Friday at Cabrini, with the District 12 championship played at Bonner-Prendie on Halloween. On Tuesday, the PCL named Wood’s Jane Candland and Emily Knouse to the all-League first team.

No. 1 New Hope-Solebury (13-7) has won the last two 2A district titles, and made the 2021 state playoffs. The Lions play No. 2 MaST Charter on Thursday for the district crown in Bensalem, followed by a sub-regional on Nov. 2 with the District 11 champion to earn a PIAA berth. Panther Valley was the top seed entering District 11 tournament play.

No. 1 Faith Christian (19-2) handled No. 4 Dock Mennonite 3-0 in Tuesday’s class A semifinal, setting up a Thursday final with No. 3 Sacred Heart at Bensalem. This is a rematch of the last two district title games, with Sacred Heart having won both.

The winner faces the Class A District 11 champion on Halloween to earn a PIAA berth. Nativity BVM was the top seed entering District 11 tournament play.

The first round of the Penn-Jersey Athletic Association tournament will be played this coming Monday and Tuesday. The Solebury Spartans await word of whether they will host a first-round game. Solebury was 7-7 (6-6 PJAA) at press time.
