Trevose Horticultural Society’s flower show is “Rooted in History”

Posted

In celebration of the Trevose Horticultural Society’s 100th anniversary, the society will stage a National Garden Club Small Standard Flower Show, “Rooted in History,” 4-8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 18 and 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19 at St. Ephrem Catholic Church, 5400 Hulmeville Road, Bensalem.

The public is invited; admission is free. Nonmembers are welcome to enter. However, advanced registration is required for competitive design entries. Contact the Advance Registration Chair at 215-322-4154 prior to Aug. 2.

The centennial theme is prominently and creatively featured throughout the Design Division. A National Garden Club (NGC) Functional Table design style, “Time Capsule,” is a celebratory table setting for two. An NGC Still Life, “Victory Garden,” emphasizes the gardening theme highlighted by plant material. A creative class, “This is the Future,” offers a selection of environmental themes that may be used only once. “Kodachrome” challenges the entrant’s creative use of color. In the Botanical Arts Artistic Craft class, “Art Deco,” participants design a brooch using all-natural plant material.

The horticulture schedule offers a variety of competitive classes for area green-thumbs, including annuals, perennials, roses, houseplants, evergreen and flowering branches as well as herbs and vegetables. The “Annual Introductions” classes must include recently marketed varieties of flowers and vegetables offered in 2023. Members enter their specimens grown from seed in special challenge classes of zinna, squash and potted dill. Entrants may also compete in sections for foliage and flowering container-grown plants, including a themed dish garden, a Horticultural display and patio planters.

In the NGC newly added Youth and Sponsored Groups Division children aged 18 and under may compete in the Junior Horticulture Section which includes classes for vegetables, flowers, and herbs. Both youth and senior groups from the Bensalem Senior Center will compete in their respective classes in the Sponsored Groups Division decorating a decoupage clear glass container with colored tissue and all-natural materials.

Several informative displays focus on broadening the public’s environmental awareness.

Coordinated by Richard Longcoy of Warminster, an informative exhibit, “Home Gardening Over the Century,” will describe how the early century home “crop” gardening was a necessity to feed your family. Today, gardeners not only reap the benefits of gardening but also find personal pride and enjoyment in their new “hobby.”

An educational exhibit, “A THS Centennial Celebration,” coordinated by show Chairperson Karen Wychock of Warrington, is a review of the society’s 100-year history through photos, artifacts, flower show schedules and awards.

A selection of homemade goodies and market tables laden with fresh home-grown flowers and produce, handmade bird-themed novelties, garden related items and potted plants are always a popular stop for visitors.
