Posted

The winning entries from the Bucks County-based Photo Review’s 2023 International Photography Competition will be on exhibit at Woodmere Art Museum in Chestnut Hill, beginning Aug. 5.

“The Photo Review: Best of Show 2023” will shine a light on 15 prizewinners chosen by noted photographer, teacher, and author Deborah Willis, who served as juror.

Also opening Aug. 5 at Woodmere will be “Just In: Recent Acquisitions,” which will showcase important works by Philadelphia’s contemporary artists acquired since 2019 and demonstrate the diversity of voices in the living arts in Philadelphia.

A free opening reception for both exhibitions is scheduled for 1 to 3 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 9.

Willis selected the winners from more than 1,300 entries. Now in its 38th year, the competition is organized annually by The Photo Review, a critical journal of national scope and international readership.

“The work selected by our extraordinary juror this year, Deborah Willis, continues the tradition of presenting an amazing array of fabulous and diverse images by both established and emerging photographers.” said Stephen Perloff, editor of The Photo Review.

William R. Valerio, The Patricia Van Burgh Allison Director and CEO at Woodmere Art Museum, said, “Woodmere is thrilled to again be the host for ‘The Photo Review: Best of Show,’ filling its galleries with photography selected through the critical lens of a juror as highly revered as Deborah Willis. It is exciting to align Willis’ fresh perspective with the opening of ‘Just In,’ showcasing many new works added to Woodmere’s collection in recent years.”

“Just In: Recent Acquisitions” will highlight a variety of media, including painting, sculpture, printmaking, and photography, from Aug. 5 through April 7. The exhibition will also feature recently acquired jewelry, offering a preview of galleries that are to be dedicated to Philadelphia’s metalsmithing and jewelry arts in Woodmere’s newly acquired Frances M. Maguire Hall for Art and Education

Woodmere Art Museum is located at 9201 Germantown Ave., Philadelphia. Visit online for information.
