When Pennridge played Conestoga in the District One 4A title game, it was a tight 1-0 match.
Friday night’s rematch for the girls state title had all of the drama of a Harlem Globetrotters/Washington Generals game.
Pennridge (25-0-1) completed an unbeaten season with a 4-1 win over Conestoga in Mechanicsburg to win its second state title in four seasons. Hailey Primwhere and Anna Croyle both scored in the first 13 minutes to build a 2-0 lead. The Pioneers cut the margin to 2-1 in the 44th minute but Primwhere added a second goal five minutes later and Liv Grenda, the Rams’ all-time leading scorer, punched in an insurance goal.
Pennridge was making its fourth state title trip since 2018. The dominant Rams outscored opponents 21-1 in their four state games.
On the boys side, Central Bucks South (19-6-2) saw its magical year end in double overtime in the 4A boys state final on the same field in Mechanicsburg. South’s match with Conestoga pitted the District One champion against the Titans, who snagged the sixth and final spot out of District One.
Josh Dozier headed in a corner kick in the 45th minute to give South a 1-0 lead. Conestoga equalized it in the 63rd minute and then won it in the second overtime on a gorgeous free kick from Ryan Zellefrow.
CB South was making its first trip to states since 2011. A phenomenal defense allowed just three goals in four state games plus four overtime periods.
