South Hunterdon’s Rampel finishes in top 10 at NJSIAA championships

Posted

For the South Hunterdon track and field team, it was a bittersweet day.

Overall, though, the Eagles had their share of highlights at the NJSIAA Group Championships - 1 and 4 at Franklin High School June 7-8.

Senior Ryan Rampel finished seventh in the discus finals with a season best of 140-1, and he notched an eighth-place finish in the javelin at 155-5. His throws in the discus and javelin were the fourth-best school performances at the championships. Rampel earlier set the school record at 158-2 in the javelin at the Skyland Conference Championships.

Junior Sophie Hinman, who won the 1,600 a week earlier at sectionals, fell ill before the 1,600 race and did not participate. Hinman did run in the team’s 4x800 relay team that finished 12th in 11:04.45. She was joined by junior Olivia Nemeth, freshman Erin O’Rourke and junior Ava Duggan, and the foursome posted a personal record and a third all-time program finish at the state meet.

Junior Liam Sirak set a new personal record in the triple jump with a mark of 39-10, and the boys 4x800 relay team of senior Juan Perez-Castro, junior Alejandro Ramirez, sophomore Henry Brusca and senior Jack Edwards were 19th in a time of 9:13.70. It was a season PR and fourth all-time for the school at the championships.
