South Hunterdon bewitches Salem in first round

Posted

The No. 2 South Hunterdon Eagles (9-1) extended their win streak to nine on Friday night in West Amwell by beating No. 7 Salem 16-6 in the first round of the Central Jersey Group 1 sectionals.
Salem struck first with a second quarter touchdown but two Ryder Manfready second half touchdown runs of 14 and 12 yards sandwiched a safety to give the Eagles 16 unanswered points to close the game. Manfready, ordinarily used as a receiver, had his biggest game of the year on the ground.
The win gave the Eagles their first sectional victory since 2014, a year where South Hunterdon advanced all the way to the finals.

South Hunterdon has allowed just under 10 points per game during the win streak. A ball-hawking defensive unit caused 21 turnovers in the regular season.
The Eagles will host No. 3 Glassboro, 28-0 winners over No. 6 Keyport, on Friday.
