Sewage plan update in the works for Chalfont, New Britain Township

Posted

Chalfont Borough Council on Oct. 10 heard from the Chalfont New Britain Township Joint Sewage Authority, which is in the midst of an effort to update its Act 537 Sewage Plan maps.

John E. Schmidt, executive director of the CNBSA, gave the update and answered questions from council members.

Schmidt, who has held his position on the authority for over 20 years, also took this time to announce his retirement. Council President John Engel responded by thanking Schmidt for his work over the past several decades, referring to him and the CNBSA as “unsung heroes.”

The Act 537 Sewage Plan maps have not been updated since 2005, according to Schmidt. It will take the authority time and resources to complete the update and address any leaky and/or eroded pipes.

Schmidt explained that, while there is no immediate rush to get repairs done, it should happen sooner rather than later, as any issues currently in the pipe system will slowly worsen over time if left unchecked.

In other news, the North Branch Neshaminy Bridge on Route 202 was reported to be in a “moderately deficient” state, which requires repairs to maintain its structural integrity.

However, council members are generally hesitant to engage in any repair projects, as doing so would require closing the bridge for a brief period, which would disrupt local businesses in the area.

Engel said during the meeting that North Branch Neshaminy Bridge is not in the worst state it could possibly be in, because the bridge has not had its weight limit adjusted. Barring any weight-limit adjustments, Engel said he does not yet feel the need to close the bridge for repairs.
