Safety improvements approved for busy Wrightstown intersection

Posted

Improvements aimed at making a busy intersection in Wrightstown safer appear to be forthcoming, township officials said at the Board of Supervisors meeting on Aug. 21.

Following an increase in accidents in recent years where Penns Park Road meets Second Street Pike (Route 232), the supervisors that locally govern Wrightstown wanted to enhance safety at the intersection.

To that end, supervisors authorized Township Traffic Engineer Matt Johnston of Pennoni Engineering to perform an analysis and suggest upgrades. Johnston did so and the plan was reviewed with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, which has green-lighted proposed improvements, officials said.

“The work will be completed by PennDOT resources as time permits,” said Wrightstown Supervisor Chairman Chester Pogonowski.

For Route 232, the work includes the installation of “SLOW” and intersection markings in the travel lanes, as well as the replacement of a number of signs and installation of white dotted edge lines and yellow dotted double center lines through the intersection.

For Penns Park Road, the work includes the installation of “STOP” markings in the travel lanes, sign replacement, and installing a double yellow center line, Pogonowski said.

Johnston’s study determined that Second Street Pike/Penns Park Road experienced 51 vehicular accidents between 2018 and 2023, with 90% of all collisions being a result of a driver making a turn at the intersection when there was oncoming traffic.
