NY Times “Modern Love” writer celebrating new book in Doylestown

Posted

Lancaster author and New York Times “Modern Love” contributor Suzette Mullen just released a new book about coming out later in life, and she’s celebrating with a local book signing at Doylestown Bookshop at 6 p.m. March 22 with Bucks County’s own Ashleigh Renard.

On the surface, Mullen had it all – a kind and successful husband, two thriving adult sons, and an ocean-view vacation home. But beneath the happy facade was a woman who watched her friends walk boldly through their lives and wondered what was holding her back from doing the same.

Digging into her past, Mullen uncovered a deeply buried truth: she’d been in love with her best friend – a woman – for nearly two decades. Leaning into these “unspeakable” feelings would put her identity, relationships, and life of privilege at risk, but taking this leap might be her only chance to feel fully alive.

By moving to Lancaster in 2017 and through her work as a founding board member of the Lancaster LGBTQ+ Coalition, Mullen further discovered who she was meant to be.

She is sharing her empowering midlife coming out story in “The Only Way Through Is Out” (University of Wisconsin Press).
