Music students invited to apply for Caprio competition

Posted

The Riverside Symphonia invites music students to apply by Feb. 5, to the 2024 Caprio Young Artists Competition, which will be held Sunday, March 24.

The biennial competition provides a unique opportunity for exceptional young musicians to receive cash prizes: a $2,000 first prize and a performance with the Riverside Symphonia and Maestro Marius Smolij; a $1,000 second prize; and a $500 third prize.

Classical music students (excluding keyboard) who live or study in New York, New Jersey or Pennsylvania and who will be no more than 22 years of age on March 23, are eligible to apply. The final round will be judged live at South Hunterdon Regional High School, 301 Mt. Airy-Harbourton Road, Lambertville, N.J.

Since its inception in 1998, the Caprio Competition has attracted many regional young musicians and awarded over $50,000. Previous Caprio winners perform as soloists and in professional ensembles and orchestras across the country.

The competition honors the life and legacy of John-Michael Caprio, founding music director and conductor of the Riverside Symphonia, who was the director of music for the Archdiocese of New York and choir director at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, New York, N.Y. Current Maestro Smolij continues the mission of the Caprio Competition to encourage, support and inspire young musicians.

This program is made possible in part by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts; The Arts and Letters Foundation, Barbara and Jay Belding; and ShopRite of Flemington, N.J.
