Montgomery County Senior Softball League presents donation to Peak Center

Posted

The Montgomery County Senior Softball League (MCSSL), now in its 24th year, has adopted the 2022 tag line of “Seniors Helping Seniors,” and has designated The Peak Center as this year’s recipient of its annual charity contribution

One of the area’s senior activity organizations, the MCSSL’s membership currently has over 200 senior softballers age 60 and over. The MCSSL’s home is established in Hatfield at School Road Park, where the league plays a summer season between April and October. The league also plays a winter season indoors at the XL Sports World in Hatfield from January through March.

The MCSSL began in 1999 when a handful of “old-time softballers” decided to get together in a local field and play some softball. The idea continued to grow as more and more seniors discovered how much fun it was, and within a year a league was formed. The league quickly grew into a sanctioned organization and set itself up to play under the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) rules for senior softball.

By 2015, the organization had grown to where it sported over 200 players participating in both summer and winter seasons. The members recognized their good fortune over the preceding years, and decided it was time to give something back to the community. The MCSSL’s annual charity endeavor was born. Each year monies have been raised through league activities, such as its annual league softball tournament, annual golf outing, collection and sale of used golf balls, and personal donations.

Local recipients in the past have included VMS, Hatfield Police Fund, William Chapman Memorial Scholarship Fund Hatfield, Pennsylvania Veterans Foundation, Montgomery Township Spartans Baseball & Softball Association, Manna on Main St. and the Keystone Opportunity Center.

In addition, the league also annually hosts a Phillies Ball Girls Charity event, where the senior team plays against the group of young softballers, with proceeds going to Phillies Charities.

Since 2015 the MCSSL has donated over $20,000.
