Kehilat HaNahar hosts virtual youth arts program

Posted

In addition to its weekly classes, Kehilat HaNahar (The Little Shul by the River in New Hope) is hosting an after-school virtual Youth Arts Beit Midrash – a virtual learning studio where students can express Jewish values and narratives through their preferred artistic medium.

Led by Rabbinic intern Steph Breitsman, KHN’s art program begins with a Jewish story that is tailored to the age of the learner, explored for its teachings, and interpreted through students’ artistic creations.

“The students are learning to translate the text they’ve read into artistry in such creative ways,” said Breitsman. “Sometimes those translations are literal and tied directly to the story. Other times the connections are quite abstract and express how the students are feeling about what they’ve learned.”

For example, students first studied the creation story in Genesis, when there is initially chaos in the universe. They then interpreted what different levels of chaos might mean to them through an art medium of their own choosing.
