Hans Gustav Schroeder, born April 8, 1938, passed into the eternities on Nov. 12 after a valiant fight with leukemia.
Born and raised in Forest Grove, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late John and Helen (Weiss) Schroeder. The oldest child, he is now survived by Greta Curry, Wilhelm (Wes) Schroeder and Karin Choi. He was married to his late wife Judith Rupinski for 41 years.
Hans graduated from Central Bucks High School and went on to Juniata College completing a degree in physics. He worked various jobs in industry in addition to a period of service in the Pennsylvania National Guard. He ultimately settled into a career as a general contractor partnering with his brother Wes. For more than 50 years, Schroeder Brothers specialized in the renovation of old and historic structures in Bucks County. A tinkerer by nature, he continued to maintain and improve his property in Furlong until his death.
Hans was one of the earliest champions and members of the Libertarian Party in Pennsylvania, and was their local candidate for U.S. Congress in 1980 and 1982. For decades, Hans published “The Pragmatist,” a national Libertarian editorial magazine, authoring countless articles and editorials. He served as a delegate to more than one Libertarian national convention.
Hans lived a life of curiosity and experience. He and his late wife enjoyed many cruises throughout the world together with her family. He was an avid skier, skiing mountains throughout the United States and Europe. In February 2023 he enjoyed a week of skiing in Sun Valley as a member of the Tiroler Ski Club and remained a season pass holder at Blue Mountain until his death.
Perhaps more than anything Hans enjoyed the company and companionship of the many dogs he and his wife Judy rescued during their life together. It is fitting that he will be placed near his beloved dog “Print” and he will be deeply missed by his current canine companion, “Diamond.”
In addition to his siblings, Hans is survived by his nephews David, John, Jeffrey, and Kurt, nieces Susan and Kristina and his wife’s sister, Jill Rupinski.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to the American Red Cross or Fox Chase Cancer Center would be appreciated. Hans was the humble recipient of numerous units of blood and platelets offered by volunteer donors and was the thankful patient of a care team that often moved him to tears.
