Frenchtown Bookshop hosts author of middle-grade novel on censorship

Posted

Award-winning author Amy Sarig King comes to the Frenchtown Bookshop from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, to celebrate the release of her timely middle-grade novel, “Attack of the Black Rectangles,” which takes on censorship and intolerance.

When sixth-grader Mac discovers that words have been blacked out from his classroom copy of “The Devil’s Arithmetic,” he and his friends are outraged. The principal doesn’t take them seriously. Mac’s dad tells him to calm down. But, Mac was raised to call out things that are wrong, and he is about to see the power in not keeping his words to himself.

King wrote the book after learning that “The Devil’s Arithmetic” was censored in her own southeastern Pennsylvania school district.

King’s middle-grade books include “Me and Marvin Gardens” (Washington Post Best Book of the Year) and “The Year We Fell From Space” (ALSC Notable Children’s Book). Her young-adult books (under the name A.S. King) have won numerous prizes.

The event is free and the public is welcome. RSVP on the Frenchtown Bookshop website.
