On Tuesday, Doylestown Township officials, state lawmakers and others braved the cold wind at Central Park for a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the start of an ambitious recreation and park improvement project.
The nearly $13 million undertaking will see an 18,000-square-foot community center on the Wells Road complex. Included in the center, will be a 7,700-square-foot gym, a 300-square-foot kitchen and a 2,850-square-foot all-purpose room, a lobby and a 900-square-foot indoor/outdoor patio space complete with a fireplace.
“We’re very excited,” said Barbara Lyons, chairwoman of the township’s board of supervisors. “It’s going to be great fun for everyone.”
The Central Park Recreation Center and Park Improvement Project coincides with the 30th anniversary of the township’s purchase of the 155-acre park.
In addition to the recreation center, plans call for construction of two basketball courts, four tennis courts, six pickleball courts and two bocce ball courts, which will be home to the Special Olympics Bocce Ball Team, officials said.
Public restrooms will be built near the park’s iconic Kids Castle and the amphitheater, which hosts events and concerts.
The project is expected to take between 12 and 14 months, said township manager Stephanie Mason, who added, “this is going to be fabulous.”
