Del Val, Warren Hills athletes raise funds for Buddies Unified

Posted

Ball & Sprawl, a football and wrestling event, held on the Delaware Valley Regional High School football field, garnered $1,880 for Del Val’s Buddies Unified program.

The event pitted Del Val athletes against those of Warren Hills High School in football scrimmages and wrestling matches. Next year, Warren Hills will host it, and also pick the recipient of the proceeds.

“Ball & Sprawl brings the communities together and keeps the kids active,” said Del Val wrestling coach Andy Fitz. “It was a wonderful night and helps out a great organization.”

Buddies Unified helps bridge the social gap between special-ed and general-ed students by bringing them together for parties and athletics (basketball, soccer and a mix of spring sports), with special-ed teachers Janice Jones and Allie Breithoff as advisors.

Jones said, “Everything we do aims to bring the school closer together, and we are so grateful” for the donation. The money came from food concessions and a $5 admission fee.

Although the evening of athletics was not an official part of the high schools’ program, the four head coaches and their staff volunteered their efforts to make it a success. Besides Fitz, they are Del Val’s Mike Haughey, and Warren Hills’ football coach Marcus Gurdineer and wrestling coach Dave Sbriscia.
