Burger King eyed for corner of routes 313 and 113 in Hilltown

Ampler Restaurant Group, a Georgia-based company, wants to build a Burger King at the bustling intersection of Route 313 and Route 113 in Hilltown at a site where there’s already a Wawa.

The Hilltown Planning Commission discussed the plan Monday night and ultimately granted it unanimous approval. The development plan must still receive final approval from the three-person board of supervisors that governs the municipality before any building can occur.

David Christ, chairman of the planning commission, noted that Hilltown supervisors had several years ago granted preliminary approval for a fast-food restaurant with a drive-thru to be situated on the approximately 4-acre property when they gave the green light for an older, smaller Wawa to be torn down and a modern Wawa with gas pumps to be constructed.

That approval occurred several years ago but, at the time, the particulars on the fast-food restaurant — what it would be, when it might set up — were said to be unknown.

The larger Wawa opened in 2021. And now, the fully envisioned site build-out, complete with a fast-food establishment, is up for consideration.

“There’s not a time frame yet for when construction on the Burger King might begin or when it might open,” said Christ. “They still need to go before supervisors.”

Christ explained the plan calls for a drive-thru and for in-person dining. The preliminary approval would allow an establishment of about 4,400 square feet but the proposed Burger King building up for final approval is about 3,100 square feet, Christ noted.

Hours of operation are proposed at 6 a.m. to midnight Sunday through Thursday. Saturday and Sunday would be 6 a.m. to 1 a.m., as proposed. It’s possible the Burger King could eventually apply to operate 24 hours a day but that’s not being proposed at this point, according to Christ.

The Wawa and proposed Burger King are situated at a high-traffic intersection that includes a CVS and a Weis Markets. Route 113 is a major east-west connector in Upper Bucks, while 313 is a major route connecting Quakertown to Doylestown.

According to its website, Ampler Restaurant Group owns and operates 174 Burger Kings in the U.S. The company says it has 462 restaurant locations overall, with its other quick-service restaurant brands including Taco Bell, Little Caesars, and Church’s Texas Chicken.
