Bucks County SPCA Humane Law Enforcement Officers rescued 33 cats and three large dogs from a urine- and feces-littered hotel room in Feasterville-Trevose Wednesday.
Hotel staff notified BCSPCA after discovering the animals during a routine inspection of the room, said Cindy Kelly, director of communications and development.
BCSPCA Officers served a warrant to the owners of the animals upon arrival at the hotel. Inside they found three dozen animals roaming freely in filthy crowded conditions, Kelly said, adding urine and feces littered the room. The strong smell of ammonia stung the officers eyes, she said, as they worked to remove the animals and transport them to BCSPCA’s Lahaska Shelter.
The shelter’s staff worked quickly to comfortably house the animals and assess their medical needs. Each one was examined by BCSPCA’s veterinarian upon arrival. One cat is being treated for pyometra, a serious infection of the uterus. These animals have been surrendered to BCSPCA and will remain in the care of the agency while they recover and until they can be placed for adoption. Charges against the owners are pending, Kelly said.
“The large influx of animals puts a strain on busy shelters,” said BCSPCA Executive Director Linda Reider. “Summer is our peak season with many lost pets and kittens being brought in each week. Our staff are putting in long hours to ensure each animal is comfortable and well cared for. The community can help by adopting available pets from both shelters to make room for new arrivals.”
You can aid the recovery of the rescued dogs and cats by donating to BCSPCA’s Animal Relief Fund. Donations of cat litter (Tidy Cat non-clumping) are also needed and can be dropped off or shipped to BCSPCA in Lahaska or Quakertown.
