Herald announces hiring of a new editor-in-chief

Posted

John Anastasi, a veteran Bucks County journalist, has been named as the Bucks County Herald’s new editor-in-chief and successor to Bridget Wingert, the paper’s founding editor. His first day on the job is Monday, Dec. 19.
“John’s 24-year track record as a respected journalist, combined with his deep knowledge of our region and reputation as a person of great integrity makes him the right person to lead our newsroom,” said Joe Wingert, publisher.
Anastasi, a resident of Middletown Township, will oversee the Bucks County Herald’s print and digital news operations which encompass nearly 30 municipalities and seven school districts throughout Bucks County and parts of Hunterdon County.
Anastasi got his start as a staff writer for Montgomery Newspapers and spent the last 22 years at the Courier Times and Intelligencer, now a part of the Gannett/USA Today Network. As a reporter and editor, he has reported on everything from government, education, and sports to digital content. He also led a statewide editorial page team.

“I am thrilled to join the Herald and I’m wholly committed to doing the work I love in the community I call home,” said Anastasi. “Bridget Wingert has been a force and a fixture in our towns, and I want to carry on the legacy she’s earned.”
Bridget Wingert, the paper’s founder and editor for 20 years, will remain in her role as president of the Bucks County Herald Foundation, overseeing fundraising efforts that began when the newspaper gained nonprofit status in 2020.
“While other local news organizations are contracting or closing down, we are growing. We moved to our county seat of Doylestown last summer, we’re covering new parts of the county, and connecting with new print and online readers every day” Joe Wingert said. “It’s an exciting time for John to be joining us and we are confident he’s the right person to lead us into our next chapter of our optimistic future.”
