Posted

La Fiocco, the Bucks County-based baroque music ensemble opens its 2022-2023 season with “Phantasticus! Virtuoso Music for the Habsburg Emperors.”

The program features German, Italian and Austrian instrumental and vocal music of the 17th century, including works by Tarquinio Merula, Andreas Falconieri, Antonio Bertali, Samuel Capricornus, Christoph Bernhard, and Crato Bütner.

The musicians performing on period instruments are Nathaniel Cox, cornetto and theorbo, Claire Smith Bermingham, baroque violin, Allen Hamrick, dulcian and recorder, Donna Fournier, viola da gamba, Jorge Torres, theorbo and baroque guitar, Benjamin T. Berman, harpsichord, and artistic director Lewis R. Baratz, recorder and harpsichord. The concert will also feature soprano Agnes Coakley Cox.

“Music written in the Stylus Phantasticus, or fantastic style, is very virtuosic, flamboyant, sometimes even bizarre, always exciting” said Baratz, who also directs the Chamber Orchestra at Lafayette College.

Performances of Phantasticus! will take place at Christ Congregation, 50 Walnut Lane, Princeton, N.J., at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, and at Trinity Episcopal Church, 6587 Upper York Road, Solebury, Pennsylvania at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23. Tickets are $25 general admission, $10 students, free for children 12 and under, and are available at the door (cash or check), and online by credit card at lafiocco.org. Masks are required.
