Anthony Volpe named Yankees’ Opening Day shortstop

Posted

Anthony Volpe can have a celebratory drink. Barely. But he sure earned one.

Just 21 years old, Volpe, the New York Yankees’ top prospect, was named the Bronx Bombers’ Opening Day shortstop. In a monster spring training, he hit .314 with an OPS of 1.064, 10 extra-base hits and five steals in his first 17 Grapefruit League games.

The Yankees selected Volpe in the first round of the 2019 draft. A Watchung, N.J., native, Volpe has ties to the area. He played for the Flemington-based Diamond Jacks travel program between the ages of 11 and 14.

Volpe will be just 55 days older than another Yankee shortstop, Derek Jeter, when the Captain made his debut. Volpe socked 21 homers and stole 50 bases between AA and AAA last season, making him the first minor league player to accomplish that since Andruw Jones in 1995.
