Yardley celebrates the old-fashion way

Posted

Trains, trolleys, a tinseled tree, and treats. Come see the Old Library by Lake Afton decked out in its holiday best on Dec. 3, 10, and 17.

The Yardley Historical Association will welcome visitors to Community Open Houses from 1 to 4 p.m. each Saturday. The festivities will be held at the Association’s headquarters in the heart of Yardley at 46 West Afton Ave.

Amid the fir and the holly, the highlight will be an expansive model train layout with tooting engines, clattering cabooses, and trolleys. With familiar buildings, landmarks, and billboards, the railroad scene will evoke Yardley’s past and present.

Standing tall above the trains will be a real fir tree decorated with cranberry and popcorn strings, cornucopias, tussy mussies, hand-made paper ornaments, and chromolithographs all in the spirit of the Victorian era when the Old Library was built.

Packaged cutout sugar cookies will be offered to all, and “Yardley” gifts – the new “Yardley’s Dream” mugs and note cards, the third Old Library ornament, embroidered tea towels, books, and prints – will be available to purchase for holiday gift giving or keeping.

In the spirit of the season, the Open Houses are free. Donations are always welcome. Proceeds will benefit the Historical Association’s efforts to maintain the Victorian library building and its collections of books, documents, and ephemera related to Yardley’s history.
