Charges pending against woman who jumped into the Delaware

Posted

State police say they have located the 30-year-old woman who jumped into the Delaware River Monday just after 6:30 p.m. Charges against the woman, who was found Tuesday uninjured, are pending, according to police.

The woman, whose name has not been released, had three children with her but authorities said they were able to safely secure the children on the Delaware Canal towpath. The ages of the children were not immediately available.

State police didn't release specifics regarding exactly where or when they found the woman, saying only that it was "through investigative leads."

The incident began when police responded to a call for a domestic dispute in Riegelsville Borough. When they arrived, the 30-year-old woman and a 34-year-old man had left the scene.

As troopers searched the area, they found the woman and three children on the walking path. As the officers approached her, she jumped into the frigid river. Attempts to rescue the woman were unsuccessful, police said. After a two-hour search, the effort was called off.

The Riegelsvile Fire Department and the Plumstead Fire Water Rescue Team assisted at the scene.

The man, who had returned to the scene, was taken into custody on a previous warrant, officials said.
