Two more Frenchtown tours offered

Posted

Frenchtown tour season is almost over. Only two more tours remain for 2023 – the Uptown Tour at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, and the Lower Cemetery Tour at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29.

The Uptown Tour goes from Bridge Street up Harrison Street, then back along the old railroad trail. You’ll see the old doll-carriage factory on Sixth Street, Doc Mullins’ hospital, old Frenchtown High School, the Barn Theatre, and the Doughboy statue. You won’t see the old sparkplug factory, but tour guide Rick Epstein will tell you about it and give you a broken spark plug that he found on the site.

He’ll also show you the home of Popeye, the actual dog who was the lucky mascot of Frenchtown High, beginning a Terrier tradition that continues at Del Val High School.

If you’re interested, send an email to RickEpstein@yahoo.com. The tour takes about 90 minutes and costs $15, but it’s free for teenagers. Be sure to register by email to learn the meeting place. If no one registers, Epstein says he’ll just stay home and rake up a few dozen leaves.

His book, “Frenchtown,” all 470 pages of it, will be available on the tour for $30. (Check, cash, or Venmo.)
