Troop 6 of Doylestown strong

Posted

Boy Scouts all over the country have been extraordinarily busy during the pandemic and Troop 6 of Doylestown is no exception. Scouting is the one extracurricular activity that did not take pause during the infamous “shut down.”

Senior patrol leader at the time, Tyler Kennedy, transitioned meetings to Zoom within the first week. Outdoor activities were the one thing that were encouraged and safe; Boy Scouts took full advantage of the outdoors and honed their skills. The troop managed to take a full crew to Resica Falls summer camp in 2020 and Camp Rodney in 2021; they trained monthly and took two full crews to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico in 2021.

Eagle Scout is the most prestigious and challenging rank to earn requiring time, resources, strong executive functioning skills and team work. A Troop 6 record was set when eight boys earned Eagle in 2021 and Michael Socci earned 8 Palms. A total of 14 Eagles were named during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Projects totaling well over 1,5000 collective hours of community service have included owl homes for Warrington Parks; bike elements at Chapman Park in Doylestown Borough; autism sensory tables for the BCIU; human foosball at the Doylestown YMCA; a bridge, trailhead markers, and invasive plant removal at Peace Valley Park; custom shelving units for t he National Giving Alliance; feral cat shelters for the Bucks County SPCA; parking lot re-design and painting at the Doylestown VFW; complete overhaul of the outdoor classroom at Jamison Elementary School; landscaping at Rolling Hills United Methodist Church; and guitar stands for every secondary school in Central Bucks School District. Projects in progress include two bridges at Chapman Park, a memorial bench and kindness box at Unami Middle School in commemoration of Joey Edwards, and a bicycle repair station at Core Creek Park.

Doylestown United Methodist Church (DUMC) in Doylestown has been the longtime sponsor of Boy Scout Troop 6. The change to “Scout’s BSA” in 2019 allowed the opportunity for the addition of a girl’s troop and together they continue to make history with the support of DUMC.

Troop 6 thanks the community for continuing to support Scouts of America, Doylestown United Methodist Church leadership and congregation, the leaders and adult volunteers of Troop 6, Bob Cull of Washington Crossing Council, but most of all, thanks goes to the Scouts of Troop 6 for continuing the strong tradition of being a “Scout led troop.”
