Statistics show leniency for clemency in state prison terms

Posted

In her letter published Oct. 20 Doreen Stratton claims that Dr. Oz is wrong in asserting that Democrats treat convicted, violent criminals more leniently. Yet the statistics she cites support Oz’s contention.

From 1979 to 2014, Republican governors granted petitions for clemency for those serving life sentences in only 2% of cases (8 of 390). Democratic Gov. Tom Wolfe granted clemency in 53% of such petitions (53 of 100).
