The vast majority of Americans feel students should have access to books that represent a variety of perspectives, even if it makes some people uncomfortable, according to the 2022 American Family Survey. A mere 12% support book bans.
As Council Rock School Board Director candidates, we believe the right to read is fundamental to a quality education. We trust our district’s teachers, librarians, and administrators to ensure the books our students read are age-appropriate, and we support the existing policy allowing parents to prevent their own children from checking out materials they find inappropriate.
In honor of “Right to Read” day, which was April 24, we encourage everyone in our district to join us in opposing extremist policies that threaten our students, the stability of our schools, and our property values.
Our school board has a duty to give students access to a wide range of books and literature.
We stand together in recognizing the value of diverse voices and the role literature plays in promoting understanding and empathy. We encourage open dialogue and the free exchange of ideas, which help students develop the skills needed to think critically, communicate effectively, and succeed in today’s complex world.
With the May 16 primary election coming up, we encourage voters to seek out and support school board candidates who will protect our children’s access to the knowledge and tools needed to thrive.
