Robert George Doan

Robert “Bob” George Doan, 84, of Fuquay Varina, NC passed away on Sunday, January 21, 2024, surrounded by his family. He was born in Doylestown, PA on May 23, 1939, to the late Mary and George Doan of Warminster, PA.

Bob graduated from William Tennent High School in Warminster, PA in 1957 and Lock Haven State College in 1961 with his B.A. in Physical Education and a M.A. in Education from Temple University. In 1959, he married the love of his life, Patricia Ann Deaner, and over their 58 years of marriage, they lived in Lock Haven, PA, Warminster, PA, Perkasie, PA, Chalfont, PA, Morehead City, NC and ultimately residing in Fuquay Varina, NC. Bob taught high school physical education and coached football and track and field at William Tennent High School and then Hatboro-Horsham High School. After teaching and coaching high school for approximately ten years, Bob began his teaching and coaching career at Bucks County Community College in Newtown, PA where he later retired from in May 1995 at which point the family moved to Morehead City, NC.

In 1993, he was inducted into the William Tennent Athletic Hall of Fame. Then in 2011, Bob was inducted into the Lock Haven Football Hall of Fame with his 1957 and 1960 PSAC Championship football teams. Bob was a captain of the 1960 Football team.

During his coaching career at Bucks County Community College, he coached many highly successful cross-country teams that won regional, state, and national cross-country titles over the years. Bob also was an assistant track and field coach at Pennridge High School for several years while he coached both of his daughters, Diane, and Sue. Bob also coached his grandson, Patrick, in baseball and golf.

Bob was known for his passion for his students and athletes and was involved in their lives which extended beyond the classroom, the gym, and the field. Bob could always be found in his garden raising food to feed his family or if the weather were nice, heading out on the Bald Eagle to go deep sea fishing. Bob and Pat loved to go on their annual cruises with family and friends. Bob is lovingly remembered by his five children: Michael Doan, Patricia “Patty” Doan, and Susan “Sue” Doan of Fuquay Varina, NC; Edwin Doan (Audrey) of Chesapeake, VA; and Diane Matlock (Chuck) of Newport, NC. Bob is also survived by 5 grandchildren. He is also fondly remembered by his brother, Harry Doan of Merritt Island, FL and his two sons, Kurt Doan of Maryland, and Jamie Doan of Pennsylvania. Bob was predeceased by his beloved wife, Patricia Ann Deaner Doan, and his parents George and Mary Doan. Visitation will be held on Sunday April 21st, 2024, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at the Spring Mill Country Club at 80 Jacksonville Rd in Ivyland, Pennsylvania 18974. A Celebration of Life will follow at 2:00 PM and a graveside service at Union Cemetery at 209 Almshouse Rd Richboro, PA 18954.
