Letters to the Herald

Put out all the facts and let the readers decide

Posted

I totally agree with Pat Smith regarding her view (Jan 19) on the Herald’s inclusion of the word “insurrection” in describing the January 6th happening at the U.S. Capitol.

While the media elevates this event, aren’t we witnessing a major case of hypocrisy? Media outlets downplayed major insurrections in cities across the nation like Minneapolis and Portland, Oregon.

During the summer of 2020, metropolitan areas of the U.S. including Seattle and Atlanta sustained massive destruction of small businesses and homes, causing millions upon millions of dollars in damage and loss. Who suffered in these cities? Primarily small business owners and poor minorities; yet, little media coverage.

At the same time, the Herald over the last many months has given the League of Women Voters many column inches of free space. While some of its endeavors, such as the present one seeking to learn why eligible individuals chose not to vote — an answer I too would like to have — are fully legitimate, others are not.

Several months ago, the Herald printed a Letter to the Editor from the leaders of the Bucks County chapter of the League, which contained a portion espousing a left-leaning agenda. Just days later, my late wife — who was never an LWV member — received a letter from the national president containing virtually the same language.

While I appear partisan in what I’ve stated here, my desire, concern and prayer — having spent the bulk of my working life in media — is for a return to honesty and integrity. Put all the facts out there for the citizens and voters to read and decide, regardless of who a report benefits or hinders. And, may it begin in the pages of the Herald.
