One death of a boater on the river is too many

Posted

The story of the death of Mr. Gentile’s son while kayaking on the Delaware (Danger warning sought at wing dam in New Hope, June 30) is heartbreaking.

While his request to the New Hope Borough Council for warning signs at the wing dam is well intended, given the sight distances, currents, flooding and multiple angles of approach, warning signs are a challenge and only a Band-Aid for several broader issues.

First, there are kayakers who despite warnings and at great risk to themselves and first responders operate in that area for the unique currents. Second, operators of any watercraft, powered and unpowered, before they enter the water must be aware of any hazards, their location and how to handle them if encountered. Rental outfitters should advise all renters before letting them take to the water.

Last, all watercraft operators, powered and unpowered, should take a USCG or state approved Boating Safety Course. Too many pleasure boat operators in the New Hope-Lambertville section of the river fail to follow the Rules of the Road, wear PFDs or obey No Wake Zones.

It is only due to the low volume of traffic that there are not more injuries or deaths in the river. One is too many.
