Young artists adopt a whale

Posted

A recent art show celebrating the wonders of the sea featured marine themed paintings by 19 youth artists from Newtown.

By selling note cards and posters featuring their artwork at the show, the students raised $1,600 for Allied Whale to support marine conservation and symbolically adopt Breakers the humpback whale.

Allied Whale, the marine mammal laboratory at The College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, Maine, focuses on research and conservation of whales and other marine mammals. As oceans warm, whales face new dangers. The Gulf of Maine is one of the fastest-warming bodies of water on the planet, and whale research there could shed light on the impacts of climate change on oceans worldwide.
