Newtown Township welcomes new police officer

Posted

At a January meeting of the board, Newtown Township Supervisors were joined by Police Chief John Hearn and District Judge Mick Petrucci for the swearing-in ceremony of newly minted officer Justin Abbonizio.

A 24-year-old resident of Warrington Township, Abbonizio joins the Newtown Township Police Department after completing a municipal police training program at Temple University this past October.

Abbonizio graduated from Central Bucks High School South in 2017 and Shenandoah University with a degree in criminal justice in 2021. He was joined by family, friends and about 15 of his soon-to-be colleagues on the force during the ceremony.

Chief Hearn spoke highly of Newtown’s newest officer, saying, “Based on testing requirements, pre-employment background investigations, and known and learned information, Justin comes highly recommended and would appear to be an outstanding addition to our team.”

Hearn spoke previously about the need for additional support on Newtown’s police force, and as part of the township’s financial framework hammered out the past several months, a position was added that Abbonizio now fills.

“Welcome to Newtown Township,” said Judge Petrucci with a handshake followed by a round of applause after the swearing-in.

Board Chairman Dennis Fisher added, “You’ve joined a great great team with excellent leadership. You’ll do well.”
