Newtown historians set talk on Lenape culture

Posted

The Newtown Historic Association will host Christine Applegate from the Museum of Indian Culture at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 20, at the Half Moon Inn, 105 Court St., Newtown.

Applegate will discuss how the arrival of the Europeans impacted the people of the Northeastern woodlands.

The Lenape took advantage of the natural resources and seasonal changes to build their society. They developed unique styles in housing, clothing, cuisine, and social structure. With the advent of the fur trade, new products became available and the relationships among neighboring tribes and the natural world changed.

The story of these changes is told through the use of hands-on examples of food, clothing, tools, furs, and trade goods.
