Noting that all police officers faced especially trying times for the image of their profession, Buckingham Township Chief of Police Michael S. Gallagher introduced Emmett Shanks at the March 22 board of supervisors meeting, as a new police officer. He is a recent graduate of the Montgomery County Police Academy, and served previously in the Prospect Park Police Department.
The appointment of Shanks, who was sworn in by District Justice Maggie Snow as a friend looked on, brings the department’s police officer total back to 21, which is understood to be the level the township has supported for at least the last several years.
It includes a 16-member patrol division, as well as a traffic safety specialist and a detective. Gallagher is supported in command by a lieutenant, a sergeant and two administrative assistants. The department serves 20,000+ residents, over 33 square miles, seven days a week.
In other news from Buckingham, the speed limit on Route 263 between Sugar Bottom Road and Old York Road has been lowered from 55 mph to 50 mph. PennDOT has agreed to the change, and it’ll be strictly enforced township officials said.
Following an inspection by PennDOT contractors, a 16-ton weight limit has been placed on the Wycombe Bridge on Forest Grove Road in Wycombe. New warning signage has been placed at the approaches, as officials, recognizing an inconvenience for some users, evaluate options toward making the new restriction temporary.
