Ten windows were removed from the former St. Laurentius Church, founded in 1882 and the oldest Polish Roman Catholic church in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.
After cleaning and restoration, the windows were installed in the Shrine’s Chapel of Our Lady of Czestochowa, also referred to as the “lower church,” where Vigil Mass is celebrated.
Following Mass, John Wisniewski, a parishioner of St. Laurentius, and artist Andrew Praszczyk will give a presentation on the history and restoration of the windows in the Shrine’s Visitor Center conference room.
“The National Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa is a center of Polish history in the United States,” said The Rev. Tadeusz Lizinczyk, provincial of the Order of St. Paul, the First Hermit that established and cares for the Shrine. “The addition of these unique stained-glass works from St. Laurentius preserves a bit of history and art, and enhances our worship space.”
The rededication of the stained-glass windows coincides with the recently completed display of a large collection of saints’ relics that surround the sanctuary in the Chapel of Our Lady of Czestochowa, also referred to as the “Chapel” of the Shrine.
