Nancy Ann Foral Andal was born on May 31, 1940 to Mayme and Marvin Foral in Breed, Wis. During the war years her family moved to Chicago and Boston to accommodate her scientist father’s war work. In 1950 they moved to Pennsylvania, where she graduated from Central Bucks High School in 1958. She attended the University of Wisconsin for two years and left to work for The Citizens for Kennedy and Johnson volunteers in Doylestown. James A. Michener funded the offices on Main Street.
After the election in 1960, she decided to do something for her country and so worked first for the Department of Agriculture and then for the Department of State in Washington, D.C.
Early in 1962 she joined the Peace Corps, training in San Jose, Calif. In August, she was sent to the Philippines to teach English and science to elementary teachers and students. She was stationed in Mabini, Davao Province, where she met Dr. Andres Andal. After the untimely death of her roommate, Nancy Boyd, she married Dr. Andal on June 1, 1963 and finished her term in Mabini.
In 1964, she and Andres moved to Doylestown where she delivered her first son, Paul, in October of 1964.
During the next four years she and Andres lived in Chicago and Providence, R.I. In March of 1968, she had her second son, Michael.
After a year in New York where Andres finished his residency in Anesthesia, they moved to Bryn Mawr, Pa. She continued to volunteer at her sons’ elementary school teaching English as a second language to newly arrived students and at night school to adults from dozens of countries.
In 1976 and 1979 she went back to finish her B.A. at Rosemont College and an M.A. in education at Villanova University.
In the 1980’s she taught at the Haverford Friends’ School, the Baldwin School and was librarian at the lower school of the Haverford School where her sons were in attendance.
In the early 1980s she worked as a reporter for WCOJ Radio in West Chester and then went into selling antiques. She had a shop in Haverford for six years.
In 1994, she and Andres moved to Glenmoore in Chester County. She then volunteered as an interpreter at Fonthill Castle in Doylestown, giving 20 years of service to the Castle, conducting tours at least one day a week, and driving 50 miles each way in order to do so. For the past two years she has volunteered at the Moravian Tileworks adjacent to Fonthill.
She is very proud of the fact that she walked 25 miles for the election and reelection of Barack Obama.
Nancy died after a two-year battle with brain cancer, on Oct. 10, 2023. She is preceded in death by her son Paul, and is survived by her husband Andres, son Michael and his wife, Nina Liang, her daughter-in-law, Julia Andal, her granddaughter, Justine Andal, her brother Tom Foral and his husband, Joey Patton.
