New Hope artist John McDevitt will feature his recent sculptures along with painter Micheal Madigan in a two-person exhibition opening Sept. 24, at Morpeth Contemporary in Hopewell, N.J.
“The Weight of Hate,” Recent Sculpture runs from Sept. 24 to Oct. 16, with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24.
Included in the show are “Heavy Wait,” titled for the weight that people of color have carried; for hundreds of years they have waited for equality; and “Here Me,” a piece calling attention to domestic violence.
While stemming from difficult topics, McDevitt’s pieces do provide some optimism about the possibility for change. Describing steel – his longtime material of choice – as cold and static but with the potential to warm and move, he notes: “Steel is not afraid of change. It is different at every moment. It bends, as can we if we open ourselves to growth and transformation.”
McDevitt has exhibited at a wide range of local venues, including the Grounds for Sculpture Member Exhibition in Hamilton, N.J.; the New Hope Annual National Juried Sculpture show in New Hope; and the annual Phillips’ Mill Art Exhibition in Solebury.
