Morpeth Contemporary, in Hopewell, N.J., presents “Mystery, Memory and Magic: The Art of Lyanne Malamed.”

This is a posthumous exhibition of paintings by the New Jersey artist (1931-2022), on view from Saturday, June 8 through Sunday, June 30. The opening reception will be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 8.

Malamed created rich narrative paintings that fearlessly embrace and investigate what it means to be a woman through all stages of life. From children to elders, women are depicted both as their own unique person, and as proud members of their fellowships and families.

Mysterious and solemn, Malamed’s women challenge and confront the audience with their dignified yet isolated presence. With eloquence, skill and sensitivity, she portrays older women as teachers and nurturers, as dignified elders rich in wisdom.

Malamed approached her canvases from an art history background, showing a deep affinity for centuries-old artistic traditions. Her lavishly gilded backgrounds reference European Renaissance paintings, but with a distinctly modern sensibility. Drawing from many historic traditions, her richly symbolic language sets her apart from other contemporary painters.
