The James A. Michener Art Museum recently celebrated the artwork of Bucks County students through its Art Star Program, a new initiative to empower local young people who demonstrate passion for the arts.
A select group of 14 elementary, middle and high school students were invited to participate in the Student Art Gallery at the Bucks County Intermediate Unit 22 (BCIU). Exhibiting students received gifts during a reception held on March 21.
“We are thrilled to highlight the wonderful artwork of some of this region’s most talented students,” said Anne Corso, executive director of Michener Art Museum. “Championing the work of local artists is a major part of our mission at the Michener, and we are delighted to nurture the next generation of Bucks County artists through the exciting Art Star Program. We thank the M&T Charitable Foundation for funding this initiative and inspiring the young artists of this community to follow their passion.”
The Student Art Gallery is designed to highlight the creativity and talent of local students. Each Bucks County school district, as well as several nonpublic schools, may select one piece of student artwork to be hung in the gallery at the BCIU in Doylestown for one year – right alongside world-famous pieces from the BCIU’s own collection. This year’s gallery featured artwork from students in all 14 Bucks County school districts. Students were chosen by their district’s art coordinator and art teachers to represent outstanding art in their district.
“For the past 20 years, the Student Art Gallery holds a special place in our hearts as it signifies more than just a display of artistic prowess,” said Nicole Borland, director of teaching and learning at BCIU. “It serves as a platform for the Bucks IU and the community to express our gratitude to the 14 student artists for their invaluable contributions, their teachers who helped to guide and inspire them to continue to grow as artists, as well as the school districts who make strong art programs possible. Their artwork, adorning the halls of the Intermediate Unit throughout the school year, serves as a source of inspiration and joy for all who pass through.”
The BCIU Visual Arts Advisory Council oversees the selection process and provides the finishing touches to make the artwork ready for display in the gallery. At the end of the year, a dinner reception for the student artists and their families is held, and each artist receives a certificate and photo of their piece. Students also receive a customized tote filled with new art materials, a keepsake award pin, and four guest passes to the Michener, all made possible by the M&T Charitable Foundation.
