Studio Route 29 and Artyard present Michael Mangino “Paint” – a solo exhibition of recent works by Michael Mangino, curated by Studio Route 29.
The show will be on view in The Courtyard Gallery at ArtYard in Frenchtown, N.J., March 5 to May 21, with an opening reception from 3 to 5 p.m. March 5.
Mangino’s bodies of color hover on the page as sovereignties, surrounded always by a slight boundary of space, whole to themselves. His manner of mark-making often proceeds first with longer lines, which are then filled in carefully and exploratively with shorter marks bringing into the paintings a sense of the slow movement of moss or a vine.
Or, they are built as roof thatch; they are the ocean from above, wave going ahead of wave, they are patient, balanced stone walls. They call to mind topography, maybe because they are painted flat and turned as they are worked with shapes fitting carefully into others as meadows to mountains, or buildings to avenues.
Though shown upright on the wall, they maneuver viewers to feel themselves looking down from above. So they hover and float along with his shapes.
Mangino’s work is presented with the support of Studio Route 29 and Delaware Valley High School’s FIERCE program.
Studio Route 29 is a progressive art studio, which means it centers the creative practices and perspectives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It is a community space that champions inclusion and brings people together in play and creative spirit.
FIERCE: Focus on Independence, Employment, Resources and Community Exploration, is an employment/independent living transition program that is designed for special needs students who have completed their academic requirements for high school and are ready to transition to life as independent adults.
