Mexican street food arrives in Doylestown at Las Frida’s Mexican Kitchen

Posted

Doylestown’s newest Mexican restaurant is already creating a loyal following after barely a month in town.

Las Frida’s Mexican Kitchen at 274 S. Main St., has an extensive menu of traditional Mexican dishes for breakfast (served until 3 p.m.), lunch and dinner, all homemade.

“We have a little taste of each state in Mexico,” said owner and head Chef Enoelio Ambrocio. “Everything is fresh.” Even the tortillas, which they do buy, are made every day. “They’re still warm when they get here,” he said.

As authentic as Las Frida’s “Mexican street food” is, Ambrocio, known by everyone as Eno, said he didn’t learn to cook in his native country. “When we were little kids we were not allowed in the kitchen. You came to the table, sat down, ate and said ‘thank you.’ That was it.”

Still, the memories of the delicious food his family made stayed with him and inspired his career in the kitchen in the United States, where he’s lived for 19 years.

“I’ll call my mother and ask her ‘what do I need for this dish, what ingredient, what spice?’” said Ambrocio. Doylestown’s Las Frida’s is his fourth restaurant of the same name, which he chose to recognize famed Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.

“We have a passion for great Mexican food,” reads the restaurant’s website and is repeated by Ambrocio. “Everything from our salsas to our chimichangas, fajtas, quesadillas, tacos and huarache is made with the best and freshest ingredients,” and, he added, “with heart.”

For Ambrocio, 35, and his team, which includes his wife’s uncle and cousins, the mission is to “serve our food the same way it would be served in the streets of Mexico.”
