Melodic treats, some surprises at Lenape Chamber Ensemble’s next concert

Posted

The program for Lenape Chamber Ensemble’s July 16 concert offers well-loved music by: Franz Schubert and Robert Schumann, along with a selection by George Crumb, often called the most innovative of living American composers.

This is the ensemble’s second in the series of three Summer Gala Concerts, enhanced by the excellent acoustics of Delaware Valley University’s Life Sciences Auditorium, 700 E. Butler Ave., Doylestown.

The Wister Quartet’s Nancy Bean and Katie Hyun of the Amphion String Quartet are the violinists joining Cyrus Beroukhim as violist, and cellist Alberto Parrini in one of Schubert’s earlier works, the “String Quartet No. 7 in D Major.” Unlike the composer’s later music, which is often sad and dramatic, this quartet is described as fresh, lyrical and witty.

“Four Nocturnes” (Night Music II) for violin and piano, composed in 1964 by George Crumb, combines the formalities of traditional music with highly technical directions to the performers for special musical effects. Katie Hyun and prizewinning Steinway artist Marcantonio Barone will perform this work.

Robert Schumann’s “Piano Quartet in E flat Major,” with Marcantonio Barone joining Nancy Bean, Cyrus Beroukhim and Alberto Parrini, was written with Schumann’s wife Clara in mind. Clara was the pianist at the Quartet’s 1844 premiere in Leipzig.

On July 23, “Mozart’s Oboe Quartet in F Major” will feature oboist Richard Woodhams, along with the “Fantasy for Piano” quartet by Frank Bridge, and Rimsky-Korsakov’s “String Sextet in A Major.”

Tickets at $20 for adults, and $15 for seniors and students, will be available at the door or by calling 610-294-9361.
